Draft Review  -  Baltimore Bandits                                                                                                             by Robert Michaud

Transactions (leading up to and throughout the draft):

OUT:  1st Round Selection (18th OV); 2nd Round Selection (46th OV); 5th Round Selection (130th OV)

IN:      1st Round Selection (10th OV)

Bandits GM Dave Davis made a play to improve his draft position in the 1st Round, ultimately obtaining a Top 10 selection, which he used to acquire left wing Eric Tangradi, who projects as a promising power forward; Davis stated that his aim was to try and land a prospect who could begin his NHA career in the near future.  Tangradi will be a huge asset for Baltimore as the organization does not have much talent coming up on the wings.

Organizational Weaknesses (prior to Draft):
Skilled wingers; Top offensive pivot; Top 6 defensemen; Netminders

NHA Draft Preview Prediction:     Max Pacioretty to BANDITS at #10 overall
Actual Result:                                 BANDITS select Eric Tangradi at #10 overall

2007 NHA Entry Draft Selections
Eric Tangradi, LW  (OHL)                 [1st Round (10th Overall)]
Riley Nash, C          (BCHL)               [2nd Round (31st Overall)]
Cade Fairchild, D     (USNTDP)          [3rd Round (74th Overall)]
Paul Byron, C          (QMJHL)            [4th Round (102nd Overall)]
Milan Kytnar, C      (Slovakia)            [5th Round (131st Overall)]

The Bandits were in a position wherein pretty much whichever prospects they selected would fill needs within the organization; the use of their top picks to add forwards such as Tangradi and Nash, gives some indication that team offense was the area of greatest concern for GM Davis.  Among their 5 picks, the Bandits chose 3 natural centers, the best prospect being spark plug Riley Nash; all the Bandits are missing now is a right winger named Nash to complete the Triple Nash line in the future.

2009/06/01  Baltimore Bandits - Facing the Future
The Baltimore Bandits have been a team struggling to find their identity. Playing in the ultra-competitive Atlantic Division has made it tough for this organization to progress on the ice and the revolving management door for the first few seasons did not provide any stability off the ice, though a playoff berth last season is hopefully a sign that things are improving. There is definitely some offensive potential in the system, with franchise winger Rick Nash leading the way up front and a couple of prospective puck-moving blueliners (Campoli, Goligoski) developing their skills. The issue with Baltimore at present is that there isn't any elite young talent being developed to compliment their star player in seasons to come.

Left Wing - Left wing is a bit of a wasteland of underachieving prospects, though Daniel Carcillo brings a package of size, toughness and skill that should endear him to Bandits fans and coaches.

Center - Baltimore has a trio of prospects playing the center position who should make significant contributions at the NHA level in the coming seasons. Brandon Dubinsky has the ability to play in the Top 6 and should mature into a good 2nd line center, Jiri Tlusty has the versatility to be able to play at center or wing and the talent to succeed at either, and Trevor Lewis is a solid pivot who will take some time to reach the NHA but should become a decent two-way player.

Right Wing - Essentially, this position is barren of talent except for All-Star Rick Nash. There are no future right wingers currently with the Bandits organization projected to make an impact at the NHA level.

Defense - There are a couple of very promising rearguards on the horizon. Both Chris Campoli and Alex Goligoski have the potential to make an impact on this club as puck-moving, offence-minded rearguards. Beyond these two gems though, are several long-term projects and career minor league players.

Goaltending - The Bandits will be relying on Cristobal Huet to protect their net for the forseeable future, which is good because there are no real blue-chip goalie prospects maturing in the Baltimore system. At one time Al Montoya, a former 1st round draft selection, was thought to be a sure thing but his development has not progressed as hoped.
