Goaltending prospects; Scoring centermen; Skilled wingers

NHA Draft Preview Prediction:     Colton Gillies to CANUCKS at #14 overall
Actual Result:                                 CANUCKS select P.K. Subban at #14 overall

2007 NHA Entry Draft Selections
     P.K. Subban, D               (OHL)        [1st Round (14th Overall)]
Maxim Goncharov, D     (Russia)      [2nd Round (42nd Overall)]
Colton Sceviour, RW      (WHL)       [4th Round (98th Overall)]
Alec Martinez, D            (NCAA)     [5th Round (126th Overall)]

The Canucks seem to have adopted a 'build-from-the-back-out' philosophy, with the 75% of their selections at this year's draft being  rearguards.  All of their selections have legitimate NHA potential, especially P.K. Subban, whose energy and gregarious nature will no  doubt endear him to Vancouver fans in the near future.  Goncharov and Martinez are both talented rearguards and will be given good  opportunities to play in the NHA if they continue along their current development paths.  The only non-blueliner taken by the Canucks,  forward Colton Sceviour, projects as a solid 3rd line player down the road.  Vancouver didn't make any splashy moves at the draft but  some good drafting will pay them dividends in the future.

2009/06/01  Vancouver Canucks - Facing the Future
The Vancouver Canucks have enjoyed three straight seasons of success in the NHA, improving on their regular season record in each successive year. Post-season successes have been harder to come by, though they were Conference finalists last season. The irony of success is that it is fleeting, and this has been the case so far for a slightly diminished Canucks squad this season. Vancouver's back end will lead the way towards the future, with several young and promising blueliners learning their craft under fire. There are several weak areas, but the biggest problem that will rear up in the near future will be the lack of developing offensive talents for the forward corps.

Left Wing - There isn't a lot of help coming for the left wing, though Matt Stajan has been a pleasant surprise, bringing consistent play and versatility to the Vancouver lineup.

Center - This has become a problem area for development, as the organization hasn't got much in the way of talented youngsters playing at the pivot positiion. Ilya Zubov has some talent, but his will to come to North America has been questioned.

Right Wing - Scott Hartnell brings a warrior spirit to the ice and has already endeared himself to the fans in Vancouver.  Robert Nilsson has all-world talent but there are questions about his ability to consistently bring his best game to the rink.

Defense - In Niklas Kronwall, Christian Ehrhoff and Alexander Edler, the Canucks have a good young core to develep their defense around over the next several seasons. All three rearguards project to become Top 4 defensemen at the NHA-level and they will provide stability on the back end as the franchise enters a short rebuilding period.

Goaltending -The enigmatic and feisty Ray Emery is presently holding court in net for Vancouver and not since Eddie Belfour and Ron Hextall has a netminder exhibited his brand of competitiveness. If Emery can harnass his demons, then he could become a very good #1 goaltender.
