Draft Review  -  Mississauga Devils                                                                                                           by Mark Stefenelli

Transactions (leading up to and throughout the draft):

     OUT:  Jean-Sebastien Giguere (G); 1st Round Selection (10th OV); 1st Round Selection (22nd OV);
                2nd Round Selection (38th OV); 4th Round Selection (94th OV)

     IN:      Brian Elliott (G); Nick Foligno (LW); Alex Auld (G); Evgeny Artyukin (RW); Jack Hillen (D); Harrison Reed (RW); Dustin Kohn (D)

The Devils were one of the more active teams prior to the entry draft.  The organization was involved in four transactions that literally took them out of the draft picture entirely.  In these deals Mississauga parted ways with two 1st round picks (10th and 22nd overall), a 2nd round pick (38th) and a 4th round pick (94th), effectively leaving them with no draft selections to make in Chicago. This was an apparent attempt by GM Kucz to retool Mississauga's goaltending situation as well as add some needed depth to the system; J-S Giguere left town to make room for Alex Auld and Brian Elliott, and the Devils added a few players to the system, most notable being wingers Evgeny Artyukin and Nick Foligno.

Organizational Weaknesses (prior to Draft):
     Top 4 defensemen; Offensive centermen; Top 6 forwards

NHA Draft Preview Prediction:     No 1st Round Selection
Actual Result:                                 No 1st Round Selection

2007 NHA Entry Draft Selections

     No Draft Selections

The Devils ended the season with their own 2nd and 4th round picks, as well as a pair of 1st round picks that once belonged to other NHA organizations, though they entered into draft day with no picks and left Chicago empty-handed. The Devils have traditionally been more of a spectator than anything else on draft day. They have only made 5 draft selections (spread out over 4 entry drafts) in the history of the franchise; James Sheppard remains the only 1st round pick in Devils' draft history.  Mississauga made some steps to add some depth to their team but have hardly done enough yet to address the growing need for talented young prospects.  Aside from defense, there are some glaring holes in the system with very few prospects of note to mention; there will need to be significant steps made in the future to import some talent.

2009/06/01  Mississauga Devils - Facing the Future
The Mississauga Devils have made the playoffs in each season so far but have also been a first-round casualty in each post-season; playing in, arguably, the weakest division in the league may have played a part in this as it could have masked several organizational deficiencies. The Devils have a few promising young players to anchor their defense (Johnny Oduya, Zybanek Michalek) in front of talented netminder Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Unfortunately, there are major depth issues up front at all positions as there are very few promising young forwards in the Mississauga organizations at this time.

Left Wing - The only young left wing of note developing with the Devils is Mason Raymond, a recent trade acquisition; Raymond has speed to burn and has the skills to eventually top out as a decent 2nd line offensive option. Johan Franzen is bound to make an impact in the NHA but he is not really a youngster.

Center - The last draft yielded James Sheppard, who should become a very good two-way pivot, though hw will likely never be an All-Star; beyond Sheppard, Marc Pouliot has the greatest chance of seeing a regular shift in the NHA.

Right Wing - Nikolai Zherdev is undeniably a dynamic young winger...when he wants to be. The Mississauga prospect system is devoid of any other young NHA-certain talent.

Defense - The future here, at least for now, begins and ends with Zybanek Michalek and Johnny Oduya; the blueline in Mississauga will be patrolled by these two young rearguards for the foreseeable future.

Goaltending -There is a lack of any blue-chip goalie prospects to eventually succeed Giguere and this is a cause for concern.
