Draft Review  -  North Carolina Eagles                                                                                                     by Robert Michaud

Transactions (leading up to and throughout the draft):

     OUT:  Mathieu Schneider (D); Nik Antropov (C/RW); Petr Prucha (LW); 5th Round Selection (125th OV); 5th Round Selection (135th OV)

     IN:      J-M Liles (D); 2nd Round Selection (41st OV); 3rd Round Selection (60th OV); 4th Round Selection (89th OV);
                4th Round Selection in 2008 (from Vampyres)

The Eagles' cupboard was bare but this year they were able to add some pieces and significantly raise the talent level of their farm. While they had no 1st round selection, they did make some trades to get a few later round choices to help with the restocking. North Carolina added 2 left wingers, with the best bet being T.J. Galardi, 3 center prospects, a goalie and a defenseman, which has resulted in a healthier outlook for the organization.

Organizational Weaknesses (prior to Draft):
     Netminders; Top-pairing defensemen; Shut-down forwards

NHA Draft Preview Prediction:     No 1st Round selection
Actual Result:                                 No 1st Round selection

2009/06/01  North Carolina Eagles - Facing the Future
The North Carolina Eagles have made the playoffs in each of the first three season that the league has been in operation and appear to be poised to make it four straight post-season appearances. The team has improved in each successive season and is among the contending teams this season. The major strength of the Eagles has always been their offensive power, their line-up being a veritable who's who of league superstars, such as Marian Hossa, Marian Gaborik and Jaromir Jagr. The one big draw-back resulting from North Carolina's continuing quest for success is the lack of talented young players to replace their stars in the future. This issue will eventually become a millstone around the organization's proverbial neck, unless steps are taken to improve the situation.

Left Wing - This is the one bright spot on this club at the present time, with the Eagles having recently traded for both Marian Gaborik and Mike Cammalleri. These two dynamic young players are going to be cornerstones for the future success of the organization.

Center - There are no young centermen being groomed in the North Carolina system at present. This will have to change at some point in the future, though the pivot position is usually the easiest to fill.

Right Wing - There are presently no young right wings developing for future duty with the pro club. There is still time for this to sort itself out though, as Marian Hossa will likely be around for a while in North Carolina.

Defense - Tobias Enstrom is certainly a bright spot on the blueline for the organization, and Fedor Tyutin still projects to have a bright future, but the talent-level of the remaining rearguards will not elevate them to become regular pros.

Goaltending - The complete lack of prospective young netminding talent is cause for concern but there are many teams that choose not to develop their own goalies, as it is very unpredictable; perhaps North Carolina will continue to explore the trade option in order to fill their future goaltending needs.
