2007 NHA Entry Draft Selections
David Perron, RW/LW     (QMJHL)     [1st Round (6th Overall)]

Coming into draft day, the Hurricanes were an organization in need of some serious remodeling when it comes to their youth system. Thanks to years of competing at a high level, their quantity and quality of draft picks has been low.  Possessing but a single draft selection, the Hurricanes were limited in what they could hope to accomplish in Chicago.  An area of major weakness was addressed with the selection of David Perron, who projects as a very versatile forward with an untapped offensive potential.

Possible draft-day steals:     Too early to predict

2009/06/01  Sydney Ice Breakers - Facing the Future
The Sydney Ice Breakers have been one of the NHA's a perrenial contenders, which has had an affect on the quality of prospects in their development system. There aren't any really strong areas in the prospect system, though there is a silver lining, as there is an expected influx of high-end talent coming to Sydney at the entry draft over the next few years. There is not a lot of serious NHA talent to be found here at this time, although that could change quickly with a few trades (something this club has been known to do with a certain regularity).

Left Wing - Some obvious toughness here with players like David Koci and Eric Nystrom but not a lot of talent, since Roman Voloshenko appears to decided to permanently stay in Russia.

Center - There might be a hidden surprise or two here, despite a mostly pedestrian group of pivots. Brooks Laich seems to possess more determination and will to succeed than anyone has ever given him credit for; he looks to become a great 3rd line center in the future.

Right Wing - There are not many up-and-coming young wingers playing down the right side, with the possible exception of Patrick Eaves, who will need to stay healthy if he doesn't want to be overlooked.

Defense - The Ice Breakers have a veteran defence core but with many contracts expiring soon, some of their younger blueliners may get a shot soon.  There aren't a lot of younger rearguards in the organization, though Tim Gleason is one of the better ones.  Gleason is on track to become a dependable two-way defenseman.  Further down the road, Johnathan Ericsson may have an impact.

Goaltending - The only young goalie in the organization that might figure into future plans would be Erik Ersberg, who is a decent netminder and will probably be get a chance to be the backup to Ilya Bryzgalov in the future.
