Draft Review  -  Prince George Norsemen

Transactions (leading up to and throughout the draft):

     NONE

The Norsemen have made no transactions since the trade deadline.

Organizational Weaknesses (prior to Draft):
Future #1 goaltender; Skilled pivots & left wingers

NHA Draft Preview Prediction:     Kyle Turris to NORSEMEN at #5 overall
Actual Result:                                 NORSEMEN select Jakub Voracek at #5 overall

2007 NHA Entry Draft Selections
Jakub Voracek, RW     (QMJHL)     [1st Round (5th Overall)]
Jonathan Blum, D       (WHL)         [1st Round (15th Overall)]

In Chicago, the Norsemen found themselves in the fortuitous position of having the talented Jakub Voracek fall into their laps at the  #5 position; all of the experts imagined that Voracek would be snapped up by the #4 position at the latest, but that wasn't how the  reality played out.  Voracek is a blue-chip prospect who will add to the already impressive depth boasted down the right wing in this  organization. Prince George also paid attention to stocking their blueline, with the selection of Jonathan Blum mid-way through the 1st  round.  Prince George only had two picks to make in Chicago, but both will certainly play a role in turning around the fortunes of this  club in the future.

2009/06/01  Prince George Norsemen - Facing the Future
The first three seasons of NHA hockey haven't been overly kind to the Norsemen; the team has a record that indicates it has been growing worse over time and the franchise has moved twice since joining the league (Quebec City Nordiks, Moncton Hawks). Despite this, the stability provided by the front office over the past two plus seasons and GM Fallavollita's plans for the organization's future were beginning to pay off (until they recently parted ways), as evidenced by their talented young players who are beginning to make their mark in the league. Prince George has several future franchise cornerstones among the young forward corps (Jordan Staal, Jiri Hudler, Bobby Ryan, Devin Setoguchi, Milan Lucic), complemented by a few very talented rearguards (Marc Vlasic, Matt Lashoff); these players will all become key contributors in the seasons to come. The major weakness, until recently, has always been between the pipes; several trades have changed this outlook, but there are still no netminders in the system projected to be able to carry this team on their own.

Left Wing - Milan Lucic is an intriguing player and the hope is he can evolve into a tough power forward with an edge. Beyond Lucic, there are no other port side players in the system with high expecations attached.

Center - The Norsemen are blessed with several young talents at the pivot position. Recent draftee Jordan Staal leads this group and has a bright future awaiting him in Prince George. Tomas Plekanec and Jiri Hudler are already making an impact in Prince George and will become more complete players with time. Recently acquired pivot, Kyle Chipchura, could also carve out a place for himself on the checking line.

Right Wing - Prince George has been fortunate to draft some very promising snipers for the right side. Bobby Ryan and Devin Setoguchi are blue-chip prospects and will add a strong scoring component to this team in the future. Other young contributors include Scotty Upshall and Chad LaRose.

Defense - There are a couple of excellent young defensemen in the Norsemen system but beyond Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Matt Lashoff, the talent-level drops off significantly. Vlasic is projected to eventually take a spot in the top two pairings, while Lashoff is a bit harder to predict but certainly among the future top six; recent acquisition Anton Babchuk should at least become a 3rd pairing defender in the future but otherwise some additional young talent for the blueline would certainly be welcomed.

Goaltending - There was a time when this organization was not developing any young netminders of note but this has changed recently. The additions of Josh Harding and Justin Pogge have shown that the Norsemen have a healthy longer-term outlook on their goaltending situation; neither goalie is a sure bet to be a game-breaker but both are talented and have the potential to become the future starter in Prince George.
