Draft Review  -  Las Vegas Outlaws                                                                                                           by Robert Michaud

Transactions (leading up to and throughout the draft):

OUT:  Radek Dvorak (RW); 2nd Round Selection (40th OV); 5th Round Selection (122nd OV)

IN:      Glen Metropolit (C); Wes Walz (C); Dan Fritsche (RW); Pat Rissmiller (RW); 3rd Round Selection (63rd OV)

Outlaws GM Wayne Saby made some minor moves that appear designed to provide depth and veteran leadership for this rebuilding franchise over the coming season.

Organizational Weaknesses (prior to Draft):
Future #1 netminder; Top 4 defensemen; Top 6 forwards

NHA Draft Preview Prediction:     Patrick Kane to OUTLAWS at #1 overall
Actual Result:                                 OUTLAWS select Patrick Kane at #1 overall

2007 NHA Entry Draft Selections
Patrick Kane, RW           (OHL)            [1st Round (1st Overall)]
Sam Gagner, C/W            (OHL)            [1st Round (4th Overall)]
Nick Petrecki, D             (USHL)          [1st Round (25th Overall)]
Luca Caputi, LW             (OHL)            [3rd Round (63rd Overall)]
Ted Ruth, D                    (USNTDP)     [4th Round (85th Overall)]
Evgeny Dadonov, RW     (Russia)         [4th Round (87th Overall)]
Ryan Thang, LW             (NCAA)        [5th Round (113th Overall)]

The Outlaws have their work cut out for them as they need help at almost all positions, especially up front. They did have the luxury of having three first round picks (1st, 4th and 25th). With the very first pick of the draft, GM Saby picked up offensive dynamo Patrick Kane and then used the 4th overall selection to take Kane's London Knights teammate, Sam Gagner, who has excellent potential as a two-way pivot. Having filled their big needs up front, the Outlaws added two-way defensive gem Nick Petricki with the 25th pick of the draft. With their remaining 4 choices, Las Vegas added to their forward corps with a mixture of gritty and skilled wingers. Luca Caputi who they found in the 3rd round might even develop into a power forward to play alongside Kane and Gagner in a couple of years. The future is looking brighter in Las Vegas.

2009/06/01  Las Vegas Outlaws - Facing the Future
The Las Vegas Outlaws have have been a competitive and consistent club over the first three seasons of NHA hockey, but are now at the crossroads of a rebuilding period. An influx of some talented young players over the next few years should return this club to competitive status. The projected strength of this club rests with its young blueliners; Trevor Daley, Carlo Colaiacovo and Chris Summers are the future of this team's defense corps. There really is very little to build upon with respect to young offensive talent in the organization, though with several 1st round selections in the upcoming draft this situation will hopefully begin to change.

Left Wing - R.J. Umberger is already having an impact in Las Vegas, though he is the only young player of note who can play on the left wing.

Center - This has been a neglected position, as far as developing young talent is concerned. The good news is that decent young pivots are typically the easiest position to fill through the draft.

Right Wing - There are no blue-chip wingers in the Las Vegas system, which will be an area to focus on in upcoming drafts.

Defense - The Outlaws have a few young blueliners who were given the opportunity to take a regular shift and they haven't disappointed. Both Trevor Daley and Carlo Colaiacovo are being given a chance to learn on the job, and despite some youthful mistakes, have held their own on this rebuilding club. Chris Summers is still a few years away, but projects to be a solid Top 6 defender when he arrives.

Goaltending - It remains to be seen whether Jaroslav Halak has what it takes to take on the role of #1 netminder for the Outlaws, but he is undeniably talented and should become at least a solid backup or platoon goalie.
