Draft Review  -  Detroit Phantoms                                                                                                            by Robert Michaud

Transactions (leading up to and throughout the draft):

     OUT:  Daniel Alfredsson (RW)

     IN:      Andy Greene (D)

The biggest move made by the Detroit organization was actually made prior to the draft when they sent the rights to their talented two-way winger Daniel Alfredsson to the Rockhounds for young rearguard Andy Greene.

Organizational Weaknesses (prior to Draft):
Skilled wingers; Shut-down forwards; Goaltending prospects

NHA Draft Preview Prediction:     Brandon Sutter to PHANTOMS at #13 overall
Actual Result:                                 PHANTOMS select Oscar Moller at #13 overall

2007 NHA Entry Draft Selections
Oscar Moller, RW/C     (WHL)     [1st Round (13th Overall)]
Zach Hamill, C             (WHL)     [1st Round (21st Overall)]

This was the first time in the history of the NHA Entry Draft that the Phantoms had any selections to make in the first round and with those two choices they selected a pair of forwards.  GM Stefenelli picked right winger Oscar Moller and center Zach Hamill; both of these players have talent but are on the smaller side of the scale.  These two forwards will be the start of a much-needed rebuilding of the prospect base in Detroit.

2009/06/01  Detroit Phantoms - Facing the Future
General Manager Mark Stefenelli has spent the last two seasons re-tooling his hockey club into a quck, highly-skilled team that should be a threat for years to come.  The Phantoms are full of talented offensive players such as Pavel Datsyuk, Zach Parise, Marion Gaborik, Nicklas Lidstrom and Wade Redden, not to mention the all-world goaltending of Martin Brodeur. Detroit should be a steady NHA performer for years to come. With arguably the best goaltender in the league (Martin Brodeur) under contract for the next five years, the Phantoms' strength is definitely in the net; Brodeur has the ability to dominate a game and is simply the best puck handling goaltender in the game. Aside from  Zach Parise, Pavel Datsyuk and Martin Havlat, Detroit has little scoring depth on their roster and will need to address this at some point over the next couple of seasons. Add to this the fact that the Phantoms have an aging group of players, and the team may have some key holes to fill once some of the veterans find it difficult to keep up with today's game and are forced to move on to other things.

Left Wing - Zach Parise is the key player here and he has the potential to be an all-star player; Zach has tremendous heart and drive along with some of the best wheels in the game. Detroit will however, need to fill some gaps on left wing in the near future as there are no other young left wingers in their system.

Center - Detroit is fortunate to have a player in Pavel Datsyuk who is simply one of the best at his position in the entire National Hockey Association; Datsyuk has incredible vision, passing ability and defensive instincts and can also score highlight reel goals that other players can only dream of being able to accomplish.  Twenty-six year old Jason Williams is more suited as a third line center, but because of the team's lack of any upcoming young pivots, he is expected to center the second line for the foreseeable future.

Right Wing - The Phantoms have two of the quickest, most agile players you could ask for in Martin Havlat and Maxim Afinogenov; although both players have been plagued by injures to this point in their careers, when healthy they are extremely shifty and at times impossible to contain. Unfortunately, the organization does not have much in the way of right wing prospects, which could hurt if one of either Havlat or Afinogenov is out for any extended period of time.

Defense - Detroit has a solid defensive core with players of varying degrees of age and ability.  Led by All-Star defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom, this group has the potential to be the envy of every team in the league in terms of both offensive and defensive awareness.  Detroit is also blessed to have some quality rearguards developing in the minors, such as future top-pairing defenseman Keith Ballard and under-rated blueliner Kyle Quincy.

Goaltending - Without question, the Phantoms are set in net with Martin Brodeur, who has the ability to play upwards of 75 games a season if need be. That being said, there will eventually come a time when Brodeur will decide to hang them up and Detroit does not seem to have a plan in place for when that day comes; there is not a single goaltending prospect in the organization who projects to be a legitimate #1 netminder. Detroit does have quite a few goaltending prospcts, but none of them appear to have the tools that are necessary to be a consistent starter in the NHA, most being destined to play a possible back-up role in the NHA or left to carve out a career in the minors.
