Draft Review  -  Manhattan Warriors                                                                                                        by Robert Michaud

Transactions (leading up to and throughout the draft):

     OUT:  Kimmo Timonen (D); Alex Auld (G); Evgeny Artyukin (RW); Wes Walz (C); Dan Fritsche (RW); 3rd Round Selection (63rd OV);
                5th Round Selection (117th OV); 5th Round Selection (122nd OV); 5th Round Selection (140th OV)

     IN:      Jean-Sebastien Giguere (G); Donald Brashear (LW); Radek Dvorak (RW); Colton Orr (LW)

Heading into the draft the Manhattan Warriors possessed a few late-round picks but these were quickly traded away for players who are expected to be able to contribute immediately, subsequently resulting in a very quiet draft weekend for GM Bagnato.  Obtaining the services of veteran goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere to solidify their goaltending was a coup but the prospect cupboard is barren.

2009/06/01  Manhattan Warriors - Facing the Future
The Manhattan Warriors organization has shown a disdain for drafting in the past, citing the unpredictable nature of prospect development; this has resulted in a club with players mostly in their prime and not very many developing players in the sysytem. The future of this franchise is tied to young phenom Sydney Crosby; he is their prized franchise player and is poised to become one of the best young players in the NHA this season. The 'let other teams develop prospects' philosophy means that there are not very many young players in the organization who are projected to have any impact in the NHA.

Left Wing - A recent trade that brought Rod 'The Bod' Brind'Amour to Manhattan also saw the only good young left wingers in the organization (Prucha and Brunnstrom) moved the other way; there is no depth at this position.

Center - This conversation starts and ends with Sydney Crosby, possibly the best young center in the NHA; Crosby will become this team's leader, the face of the franchise and an NHA star in very short order.  Beyond Crosby, Dan Fritsche has the potential to be a big-league contributor.

Right Wing - The Warriors will have to look outside their organization to fill this position as there is virtually no young talent playing right wing in the development pipeline or on the big club at present.

Defense - Manhattan has a few potential young impact blueliners in Dan Girardi and Randy Jones; Girardi projects to become a good two-way blueliner, while Jones plays with an edge and can chip in offensively.

Goaltending -There are no young blue-chip goalie prospects toiling for Manhattan at any level.  Miika Wiikman and Danny Taylor are interesting prospects but not projected for a #1 role at this point intheir careers.
